Plan of High Elms Golf Course
  Hole 1
White 371 yards Par 4- stroke index 7
Yellow 365 yards Par 4
Red 357 yards Par 4 - stroke index 5

Fairway slopes right to left so try to keep your tee shot on the fairway, which will allow you a clear approach shot to the green. Avoid the greenside bunkers and watch out for the slopes at the back of the green.

Hackers Tip:
Do not go out of bounds right, its the first hole so do not blow your card just yet.

Hole 2
White 304 yards Par 4 - stroke index 13
Yellow 295 yards Par 4
Red 285 yards Par 4 - stroke index 11

Above all costs avoid the trees on the right, the very good and very brave can play over the top of the trees and get very near or even on the green. But more balls are lost in the trees than hit the green. Severe dog leg right, play it simply and a par 4 can be easily achieved.

Hackers Tip:
Don't go in the trees, just hit it onto the fairway.

  Hole 3
White 284 yards Par 4 - stroke index 15
Yellow 275 yards Par 4
Red 252 yards Par 4 - stroke index 15

A simple par 4, if played sensibly. Another hole that is driveable with a good tee shot on the right line. If you play short of the big fairway bunker 49 yards short of the green all you need is a chip up onto the green

Hackers Tip:
Hit left of the fairway bunker. If you hit it straight hope that you have not hit it good enough to find the bunkers.

  Hole 4
White 443 yards Par 4 - stroke index 3
Yellow 435 yards Par 4
Red 402 yards Par 5 - stroke index 9

With out of bounds all the way done the left side of the fairway, it would be easy to say hit it right off the tee. But you have to avoid a small copse 150 yards from the tee and then play over a much larger one to approach the green. 5 is not a bad score.

Hackers Tip:
Play it safe and play it as a par 5. Watch out for dog walkers on left hand side of fairway.

  Hole 5
White 132 yards Par 3 - stroke index 17
Yellow 123 yards Par 3
Red 103 yards Par 3 - stroke index 17

Supposed to be the second easiest hole on the course. Miss the green side bunkers and play to the middle of the green. You may have a long putt but that will be better than a long bunker shot. Don't forget the bunker at the back right of the green, many people do.

Hackers Tip:
Hit it straight to miss bunkers and big tree right.

  Hole 6
White 441 yards Par 4 - stroke index 1
Yellow 435 yards Par 4
Red 386 yards Par 4 - stroke index 1

Stroke index 1, you must avoid trees on the right hand side, although this is the tiger line if you can work it over the trees and back to the fairway, cutting the dog leg. Plenty of room left, but means a lot longer approach shot to the green.

Hackers Tip:
Avoid trees at all costs, hit it up the left hand side.

  Hole 7
White 399 yards Par 4 - stroke index 5
Yellow 387 yards Par 4
Red 341 yards Par 4 - stroke index 3

Tight driving hole dog leg left to right, trees left and right. Any tee shot on the fairway close to the marker post gives you chance to get on in regulation. Left side of the fairway gives better look at the green for your approach shot.

Hackers Tip:
Keeping the ball out of the trees is the most important thing on this hole. Play safe and keep the ball in play.

  Hole 8
White 200 yards Par 3 - stroke index 11
Yellow 190 yards Par 3
Red 174 yards Par 3 - stroke index 13

Downhill all the way, not much in the way except greenside bunkers. Over the green the ground drops away, making for a delicate chip from rough back onto the green.

Hackers Tip:
Avoid bunkers, play short and a chip on may be safest.

  Hole 9
White 548 yards Par 5 - stroke index 9
Yellow 542 yards Par 5
Red 509 yards Par 5 - stroke index 7

Longest hole on the course, fairway slopes right to left with trees most of the way down the right side of fairway. You need to hit the ball up the right side and hope you land on a flat lie so the ball will remain on flat ground. Anything that hits middle of the fairway will run down to left. The longest hitters can reach in 2 as the ground runs downhill towards hole for the last 150 yards or so.

Hackers Tip:
Keep the ball out of the trees and fairway bunker.

  Hole 10
White 367 yards Par 4 - stroke index 4
Yellow 363 yards Par 4
Red 290 yards Par 4 - stroke index 4

Fairway runs left to right on this hole, so a tee shot up the left hand side, avoiding out of bounds, will run back to the middle of the fairway. Trees on the right hand side await an errant shot and a chip out back onto the fairway will, be the only alternative. Avoid all bunkers on this hole, the 2 fairway bunkers will leave you between an 85 and 107 yard shot over over large bunkers to the green. The 2 greenside bunkers are very steep and seem to gobble up any ball that is not quite perfect. These bunkers are affectionately known as 'Jaws' to club members.

Hackers Tip:
Avoid trees and bunkers, maybe play short of green and pitch over bunkers with third shot will be the safe way to play, if not bring bucket and spade or Hamlets.
  Hole 11
White 267 yards Par 4 - stroke index 18
Yellow 264 yards Par 4
Red 257 yards Par 4 - stroke index 14

Reachable par 4 if you can hit the ball straight, the green is protected by 2 bunkers and by the ground running away severely left to right. The safe shot is to play over the ridge, left side of fairway and a short iron approach to the green.

Hackers Tip:
Safe up the left side, but not to far or you will leave a tricky approach to the green.

  Hole 12
White 477 yards Par 5 - stroke index 14
Yellow 471 yards Par 5
Red 454 yards Par 5 - stroke index 12

This hole runs right to left all the way downhill. Get a good drive away and you have a chance to get on for 2. Play it safe and a par 5 should be yours for the taking. Only real trouble is the tee shot which you must keep in play and out of trees.

Hackers Tip:
Keep tee shot as straight as possible to avoid players on 10th green.

  Hole 13
White 224 yards Par 3 - stroke index 2
Yellow 213 yards Par 3
Red 206 yards Par 3 - stroke index 2

The thirteenth, unlucky for some, many a good card has come to ruin here. Out of bounds left and right, three large bunkers in front of the green 224 yard from the white tee and all up hill! Known as one of the top 10 ten most difficult par 3's in Kent, members would not disagree with that. Play short, chip up, 2 putts, take 4 and walk off happy.

Hackers Tip:
3 hail Mary's, quick sip of Dutch courage and a prayer, if not play it as a par 4.

  Hole 14
White 426 yards Par 4 - stroke index 8
Yellow 417 yards Par 4
Red 396 yards Par 4 - stroke index 6

Huge dog leg left to right, play safe to marker post, which leaves long shot downhill but straight at the green. Longer hitters can cut the dog leg by going over the big tree on the corner, but beware of the copse of tree on right side of fairway. If you play at the marker post do not go long as the ball will find thick rough. Take a look at the pin position on 18th whilst on the tee.

Hackers Tip:
Aim at marker post so you can see the hole for your next shots.

PS: Please ring the bell, so group behind know it is safe to play.

  Hole 15
White 302 yards Par 4 - stroke index 12
Yellow 292 yards Par 4
Red 281 yards Par 4 - stroke index 10

Uphill all the way, best to play to the right side of fairway to give yourself better angle to approach green. Anything left with your tee shot will leave a very difficult approach to green and will bring the large greenside bunker and tree into play.

Hackers Tip:
Keep right and avoid bunkers at all cost.

  Hole 16
White 158 yards Par 3 - stroke index 16
Yellow 151 yards Par 3
Red 135 yards Par 3 - stroke index 18

Downhill all the way, green protected by 2 bunkers, otherwise no real trouble unless you are a long way off-line.

Hackers Tip:
Aim between bunkers for middle of the green.

  Hole 17
White 400 yards Par 4 - stroke index 6
Yellow 320 yards Par 4
Red 303 yards Par 4 - stroke index 16

From the white tee another card destroyer, tee off through a narrow tunnel of trees to the fairway, anything hit left will end up on the road to Farnborough Village. Safe shot is a left to right making sure to avoid the trees. A good tee shot will reward you with a straight approach to the green and a sense of relief. The yellow and red tees are in the tunnel of trees so the tee shot is not as difficult, but you will still need to hit the fairway to give you a chance of a good approach shot to the green.

Hackers Tip:
From the white tee, finish off the Dutch courage you opened on the 13th and take a spare ball or two back with you, if not play from the yellow tee.

  Hole 18
White 478 yards Par 5 - stroke index 10
Yellow 472 yards Par 5
Red 393 yards Par 5 - stroke index 8

Nearly finished, after 18 holes the last thing you want is a long walk uphill, well that's what you've got. Avoid out of bounds all down the left hand side, although this only comes into play with the tee shot. The fairway needs to be hit if you want to make the green in regulation 3 shots. Your approach to the green will always play longer than it looks, you will hopefully have checked the pin position when on the 14th tee.

Hackers Tip:
Deep breath, keep the ball in play, if out of bounds with tee shot head straight for the 19th!
