It's nearly
Christmas already, but perhaps it's as well 2008 is passing as quickly,
but I trust the current financial turmoil is not affecting you too badly.
Any way Christmas is coming and that means the Christmas Shotgun, where
we can let our hair down enjoy the golf with all our friends at HEGC and
forget all the problems of 2008.
Please complete the application form
and return to Pat at the Club's address, please do not leave it until
the last minute as places are limited, due to the shotgun start at 8.30
am. Please remember to be at the club by 8.00 am to sign in and avoid
any hold ups in the start, as it is a bit of a walk to some of the tees,
depending on your draw.
If you can please donate prizes for the raffle to help us raise as much
as we can for the Captains Charity and assist the club with it's finances.
We will arrange for the Pro Shop to store gifts in the week before the
competition for your convenience.
I also take this opportunity to report on Captains'
Day, which was a very successful day, well done all the winners.
One last thing, for many years now we have been running Club Draw which
has relied considerably on collection of cash contributions for the monthly
draw, £1 per share, but the numbers have dwindled due to the difficulties
of collection and time this takes for the committee. This is a good source
of funding for the club and could be much more effective if everyone paid
by standing order and a few more joined in. Please complete this standing
order form and return to Pat O'Keeffe c/o High Elms Golf Club, High
Elms Road, Downe Kent, BR6 7JL. Please make an effort to support your
club and join in this draw. 70% of the donations are distributed in prizes
and everyone stands a good chance of winning.
Your Captains and I look forward to seeing you at the Shotgun on 14 December.

when we presented him with a thank you for his 25 years service (or more)
at High Elms. More recently over Christmas we have have also been able

Well done to Rachel Johnson and Heather Neal who managed to get to the
5th round of the Daily Mail Foursomes but unfortunately lost away to Royal
Epping Forest. However, it was a magnificent effort because they took
them to the 20th hole. Once again well done, they did really well.
High Elms
won the Mayor's match 5-1.
We won our Penfold match against Addington Court 3-0.
HELLO LADIES
I really want to thank all the Ladies who came to Cobtree with me for
my Ladies Awayday. I was so pleased that you all came and made it
a very memorable day for me. I would have liked to send you a lovely card
but unfortunately it would take about 4 years from Cambodia!!!!! I had
such a really lovely day and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.
Even the weather turned up trumps!! Congratulations to Pauline for winning
the Rose Bowl. I even bought her a drink in Bangkok last week (on her
way to Aus!!)
You were so kind in giving me that lovely gift, but so unnecessary! However
after 4 failed attempts at getting out of a bunker at Cobtree. I feel
that the best use will be Bunker lessons!!!!
Once again, THANK YOU all for coming. I so enjoyed your company. NOW all
of you. Dont forget Captains Day on the 21st September. Please sign
up and come along. If only for my B.B.Q skills

Bader Cup
The Douglas Bader Foundation is a charitable organisation set up to provide
amputees with an opportunity to participate in many different sporting
activities, including golf, at the Douglas Bader Centre at Roehampton.
The Bader Cup itself is Europe's largest national mixed golf tournament.
So I am very grateful to all those who participated in the Bader Cup on
Saturday, 7 June 2008 to make it such a success. Thirteen pairs took part
on what turned out to be a most enjoyable day. Congratulations go to Chris
Long and Terry Large who won with 41 points, with a magnificent birdie
on our difficult 13th hole. Second place went to Chris Watmough and Andy
Brzozowski with 38 points. Chris and Terry now go on to represent High
Elms in the regional final at North Downs on 9 September. I wish them
every success and hope that they make it through to the Grand Final in
the Algarve from 9th to 16th November. I would also like to extend a special
thank you to Maggie and Trevor Glaum for their unselfish commitment in
making the day run smoothly.
Christine Long and Terry Large played the Regional Final on 9 September
at North Downs. They achieved a very good 20 points on the front but unfortunately
the wheels come off on the back nine and they only managed 11 points but
even so came 8th. The winning couple got 41 points. Will update on the
results when they are known.

Ladies Team Event - Thursday, 3 July 2008
Thank you to all of those who donated a bottle for the raffle, which raised
£115 for the Kent Air Ambulance Service. Once again, it was a great
day which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The winners were Barbara George,
Jenny Dines and Rose Cork from Shooters Hill with 82 points. The runners
up on count back were Brenda Ogilvy, Sheila Huggett and Avis Malloy from
Sheerness also with 82 points. Third place went to Pat McDonnell, Chris
Wesley and Jean Dignam from High Elms and Cherry Lodge with 76 points.
The nearest the pin in two on the 2nd was won by Carol Sutherland from
High Elms. The longest drive on the 10th was Linda McDonald from West
Kent and to top it all there was a marvelous hole in one on the 16th which
was achieved by the awesome Maureen Perry.
Mixed Greensomes Open - Saturday, 5 July 2008
First and foremost, I'd like to thank all those who helped raise £150
for the Kent Air Ambulance Service. The weather forecast was abysmal but
some 24 pairs had signed up to play in what turned out to be beautiful
conditions. The winners were Dorothy Featherstone and Lee Snashfold with
39 points. The runners up were Annette and David Attreed from Tilgate
Forest. With the nearest the pin in 2 on the 2nd going to Gillian and
Roger Head from Chelsfield Lakes. Finally, the best aggregate on the par
3s went to Lesley Barton and Terry Collins. A special thank you also goes
to David Walls and all the staff at High Elms who contributed in making
it such a successful festival week for the club.

Juniors
Section
The Junior Section of High Elms Golf Club meets every Wednesday during
April and September.
We play for 20 trophies throughout the year, and one of those is played
at an Away Course chosen by the captain. A variety of formats are played
these include Stableford points, Texas Scramble, Flag Competition, Stroke
Play, Greensomes Stableford and a Single's Matchplay Knockout. We also
have a Junior Open that is open to other clubs. There are two sections
A and B, in which section A is handicaps 0-24 and is a Strokeplay competition,
and section B is handicaps 25-39 and they play Stableford points.
I would like to thank the committee, because without them there would
be no junior section, and I think sometimes we need to remember all the
work they do and they don't get paid to look after us, so lets keep the
behaviour levels up and a high level of etiquette. Next I would like to
comment on the younger juniors, it was pleasing to see a greater deal
of younger juniors coming through last year, and hopefully we can get
some of the younger talent
playing in more competitions next year.
We would like to encourage getting some new members in and should you
be considering playing golf and joining a junior section, why not come
up to lessons on Saturdays and Sundays then you can see if you like it
or not (call the Pro Shop for times).
